Film
Created for Spitfire Audio's 2020 Westworld Scoring Competition in association with HBO and Bad Robot, this piece reimagines the score for a chase scene in Westworld's Season 3 episode "Genre". Prior to the scene in that episode, Caleb (Aaron Paul) is injected with a drug called 'genre' which causes him to hallucinate in a course of different genres of film. Shortly after the scene begins, he "changes genres" from noir to action. I chose to highlight that change with the introduction of orchestral elements in what had been a fully electronic score. Going forward I retained the electronic elements to represent the "real world" and other characters while continuing to utilize the orchestral elements for Caleb's perspective. Additionally, I established a number of themes throughout the scene to build associations and make moments more impactful.

Winter's Grasp from Sean Mason on Vimeo. Winter's Grasp is a short film written and directed by Sean Mason, for which I composed the musical score. The main themes were written to support the ominous tone of the film; the overarching theme of winter's dangers, death's grasp lurking behind each snowfall. Synthesized bells were used on many of the interior shots, invoking ideas of Christmas to complement the festive decorations while warping that holiday nostalgia into something alien and discordant. Strings, often with fast tremolo bowing, were used as the starring couple went about their chores, building tension and suspense as they narrowly yet obliviously avoided potential disaster. Achieving this was a highly collaborative process; I worked very closely with the director to get a better understanding of the film's intent, and to ensure that each scene was scored to make the audience feel exactly how they should according to the director's vision.

Interactive Media
DontFall_PlayThrough from Ryan Williams on Vimeo.
Don't Fall is a simple 3D platformer created by game developer Ryan Williams. I composed a single, loopable track to serve as the background music for the game's sole level. The music was composed to be consistent enough to settle in the background without any jarring changes, while being long and varied enough to not become tedious before a player might complete the level. Stylistically, it was arranged to match the game's dark sci-fi aesthetic, driven by ominous synthesizers as a delay-saturated piano plays pensive, simple melodies, an undercurrent of danger matching the level's molten floor. As is typically the case with interactive media scoring, the music needed to be loopable because the gameplay takes an indefinite amount of time to complete, dependent on the actions of the player.
